When people think of Greece, beer is rarely the first drink that comes to mind. Ouzo, wine and tsipouro usually dominate the conversation, while beer often stays in the background as the refreshing drink enjoyed on a hot summer day. Yet, few people realize that beer has surprisingly deep roots in Greek history. Archaeological discoveries suggest that beer-like beverages were already being produced in the Aegean thousands of years ago, long before modern brewing traditions emerged across Europe. Although Greece never developed the global beer reputation of countries like Germany, Belgium or the Czech Republic, a quiet revolution has been taking place over the last decade.

Today, independent breweries and microbreweries are redefining what Greek beer can be. From Athens to Crete, Santorini, Chios, Tinos and many other islands and regions, local breweries are creating interesting beers that reflect the character, ingredients and creativity of their surroundings.

The Evolution of Craft Beer

The rise of craft brewing has changed the way people think about beer. Rather than producing beer on an industrial scale, craft breweries focus on quality, experimentation and product authenticity. Consumers are increasingly looking for products with a story behind them, choosing independent producers whose values align with their own. This shift has encouraged breweries to become more connected to their local communities, working closely with nearby producers, supporting regional economies and creating beers that express a genuine sense of place. In many ways, visiting a local brewery has become as much a cultural experience as visiting a winery or an olive mill.

What Does Responsible Craft Brewing Mean?

For many independent breweries, producing great beer is only one part of the story. Responsible brewing means considering the environmental and social impact of every stage of production. This includes sourcing ingredients responsibly whenever possible, reducing water and energy consumption throughout the brewing process, minimizing production waste and finding new ways to reuse valuable resources. Many breweries also support circular economy practices, carefully selecting recyclable packaging materials and continuously improving the efficiency of their operations.

At the same time, responsibility extends beyond environmental practices. It also means supporting local communities, encouraging collaboration instead of competition and creating spaces where people can gather, learn and connect. Following that sense of community and collaboration, let us introduce you to one of our ExperienZ’ partners, who brings those principles to life.

Alea Brewing Co.: A Brewery with a Different Philosophy

Located in Athens, Alea Brewing Co. represents this new generation of Greek craft breweries. Since its foundation, the brewery has focused on producing modern, high-quality beers while remaining deeply connected to its local identity and the values that define independent brewing. Innovation sits at the heart of their philosophy. Rather than simply following international trends, the brewery constantly experiments with new styles, ingredients and collaborations, always seeking to create beers that surprise consumers while maintaining exceptional quality. Equally important is its commitment to sustainability, creativity and openness. Every beer reflects not only technical expertise but also the collaborative spirit that characterizes the craft brewing movement.

Sustainability in Action

One of the brewery's earliest decisions was to package all of its beers in aluminum cans. This choice was made not only to better preserve the beer but also because aluminum offers significant environmental advantages. Cans are fully recyclable, considerably lighter than glass bottles and require less storage space, making transportation and distribution more energy efficient and reducing the overall carbon footprint. From a quality perspective, aluminum also protects beer from light and oxygen, two of the main factors that can compromise freshness and aroma. This ensures that every beer reaches consumers exactly as the brewers intended.

The cans themselves have become part of Alea's identity due to their beautiful artprints and designs. Their large printable surface allows artists and designers to create distinctive artwork for every release, transforming each can into a small piece of visual storytelling that reflects the creativity of the brewery and the wider craft beer culture. Alongside its packaging choices, Alea continuously explores ways to improve resource management, reduce waste and optimize production processes, recognizing that sustainability is built through many small improvements rather than a single solution.

Supporting Local Communities Through Beer

Collaboration has always been one of the defining values of Alea Brewing Co. as Thanos and Giannis explain. Rather than viewing other breweries as competitors, Alea sees collaboration as an opportunity to strengthen the entire Greek craft beer ecosystem. A great example is Chloe, one of the brewery's most recognizable beers, which originally began as a collaboration with Strange Brew. Since 2020, it has become one of Alea's permanent and most popular beers, demonstrating how collaborative projects can evolve into long-term successes. These partnerships create opportunities for breweries to exchange ideas, technical knowledge and brewing techniques while also exploring new approaches to sustainability and innovation.

Beyond brewery collaborations, Alea actively participates in wider industry networks. The brewery is a member of the Greek Association of Small Independent Breweries, which brings together more than 35 independent breweries across the country to promote cooperation, knowledge sharing and the development of Greek craft brewing. Alea is also a member of the Athens Chamber of Small Businesses and works with the "Every Can Counts" initiative, supporting public awareness around aluminum recycling and sustainable packaging.

Building Community Beyond Beer

The brewery has become a meeting place where creativity and community come together. Throughout the year, it hosts events that attract not only beer enthusiasts but also artists, academics and curious visitors looking for unique experiences. One of its signature events is the annual Alea Craft Beer Festival, which welcomes independent breweries, local producers and visitors from Greece and abroad. More than a celebration of beer, the festival showcases the collaborative spirit of the craft brewing community while supporting local businesses and strengthening connections across the industry.

At ExperienZ, we are proud to partner with Alea Brewing Co. to offer immersive brewery tours and beer tasting experiences that introduce visitors to the world of Greek craft brewing.
